We love summer! It’s nice. People are HAPPY! YAY!
But, what does this do to our class attendance? I remember when I had summer classes that no one showed up for. How can we avoid that frustration and keep our classes booming?
Not friends on Facebook with your class members? Add them. When you notice they have not been coming, send them a nice message letting them know you miss them. Tag them in a fun fitness post, saying, “Hey, we should do this in class on Monday!” We all love knowing that someone is thinking about us and cares about our success. Being a great instructor or fitness facility owner isn’t just about teaching great classes or offering the best schedule. It’s about making connections and building relationships with people in our communities.
Use your Sundays!
I try to keep most of my Sundays for family days, but this is the best day to post on social media because it is the most active day that people are on and will see your posts. Don’t want to spend your Sunday on Facebook, schedule your posts in your Like Page. Post your weekly schedule and remind people to come hang out with you! Tag, tag, tag, and tag some more. See #1.
Offer an “Out-of-the-Ordinary” Opportunity!
Most of us know that the winters are long and the summers are short here in the central region. It’s no surprise that people go out and play when they can, attend bbq’s, stay up later, and soak in the summer sun. In order to keep people excited about fitness, we need to offer something different, unique, SPECIAL! I offer a cross-train bootcamp style class on Saturdays – for FREE at our school track. The only “payment” is bringing a donation item for our local food bank. We call it “Sweaty Saturday with Sarah.” It is only offered during the summer, and because it is free, I always get new people attending class who follow me back into my fall schedule in the gym!
Offer a summer challenge for attendance. This is so easy to do and takes no extra effort on the part of the instructor or facility. The person with the best attendance over a period of time wins your giveaway. Tanks, water bottles, fitness jewelry, gift certificates are all awesome ways to reward your people for staying “summer strong”!
Offer classes earlier or later than normal!
Early classes become more popular during the summer because people want the rest of their day to play. You’ll have to do a little work to convince them to wake up earlier and join in on the fun, but you can do that! It’s light by 6am here, so I do classes at 5:00am. Once they leave my class, it’s light out and the day has started. Be willing to be more flexible with your class schedule.

People travel! They want to find one of our formats while they are on the road. People move! They want to find their fitness home with the classes they love. Your members will come and go throughout the summer. Just be grateful when they show up and love on them like crazy, giving them the best hour of their day with the best workout experience with our results-based Beachbody formats!
